This letter is written with deep respect and appreciation for the work and knowledge of Prof Tim Noakes, Sally Ann Creed and Karen Thomson.  They truly started a “Real Meal Revolution” and for this we applaud them.

For better or worse, their best-selling book linked the term “Banting diet” to a radical concept of an ultra-low carbohydrate, high fat diet.  Prof Noakes has since gone on record that his diet is NOT correctly labelled “Banting” (, but should rather be called “Ebstein”, after German physician Dr Wilhelm Ebstein who first made the low-carb diet high-fat.

The notions that “Banting diet” refers to (1) an ultra-low carbohydrate and (2) a high-fat diet are historically false.  The diet proposed by Mr William Banting in his 1863 “Letter on Corpulence” was characterised by high protein, moderate fat and moderate carbohydrate intake. (about 40:3030 carbs:proteins:fats).


The Bantee range of products was crafted with the following in mind:

1. Sticking to an ultra-low carb diet over the long term is very difficult.  A 2008 study shows just how difficult:  after 6 months of following an ultra-low carb diet, most of 322 moderately obese participants returned to a high-carb diet (

2. Preparation time for an ultra-low carb meal is typically longer than for a standard “Western” meal.  This contributes to “Banting fatigue”.

3. The cost of maintaining an ultra-low carb lifestyle can be prohibitive.

4. Access to ultra-low carb food is not always possible for people “on the go”.

5. Sugar is the real enemy.

With these five pillars in mind, we put forward products that help people “cross the gaps” when the rigour of sticking to an ultra-low carb diet becomes too much.  This is why Bantee never claimed to be “Banting approved” (something that does not exist anyhow), but only supportive of a Banting lifestyle.

All Bantee ingredients are pure and carefully selected. Our products are not “rubbish” as we have been falsely accused.

Some key differences between what Sally Ann Creed calls the “Banting” diet and the original Banting diet:

From the above, it should be clear that the modern “Banting” diet that Sally Ann defends, bears almost no resemblance to the more moderate and pragmatic original Banting diet.


This is not a good time for Banting buddies to be bickering.  Like Prof Noakes, Karen Thomson and Sally Ann Creed, we would be delighted if every South African followed an ultra-low carbohydrate lifestyle.  However, the reality of life in SA is such that, from time to time, some relaxation of dietary rigour is inevitable.  By putting forward tasty solutions that are ultra-low in sugar, affordable and simple to use, we give the public the opportunity to “cheat” without increasing their overall sugar or carb intake significantly.  In our opinion, it is worse when people give up the “Noakes” diet altogether as impossible, rather than straying from it a little from time to time.

William Banting: Author of THE FIRST Low Carb Diet Book

It all started with a small booklet entitled “Letter on Corpulence Addressed to the Public”, not written by a dietician or doctor but by an undertaker named William Banting. It became one of the most famous books on obesity ever written. First published in 1863, it went into many editions and continued to be published long after the author’s death in 1878.

DO NOT CONFUSE THE BOOK WRITTEN BY PROF TIM NOAKES in which he uses the Banting Diet as the basis to which he added his science in the book “Real Meal Revolution”.

By 1862 at the age of 65, William Banting weighed 92kgs and was only 1.62 meters tall. 

Quote “I could not stoop to tie my shoes, so to speak nor to attend to the little offices humanity requires without considerable pain and difficulty which only the corpulent can understand, I have been compelled to go downstairs slowly backward to save the jar of increased weight on the knee and ankle joints and have been obliged to puff and blow over every slight exertion, particularly that of going upstairs.”

Banting decided to consult Dr William Harvey who had just returned from a symposium in Paris where he heard Dr Claude Bernard talk of a new theory about the part the liver played in the disease of diabetes. Bernard believed that the liver, as well as secreting bile, also secreting sugar-like substances that it made from elements of the blood passing through it. This started Harvey’s thinking about the roles of the various food elements in diabetes and he began a major course of research into the whole question of the way in which fats, sugars and starches affected the body.

When Dr Harvey met Banting he assisted Banting by placing him on a High Protein Low Carb Diet and by Christmas that year Banting weighed 84 kilo’s 8 kilo’s (“down”) and by August the following year Banting weighed 71 kilo’s. A overall total of 21 kilo’s simply by changing his diet to a reduced carbohydrate intake and increasing his intake of (particularly) proteins and fats.

The Bantee Shake and Bantee Bars are based on the diet followed and recorded by William Banting and NOT on the “REAL MEAL REVOLUTION”.

Banting’s description of the diet is quite clear. However, other than the prohibition against butter and pork, nowhere are there any instruction to remove the fat from meat and there are no restrictions the way food was cooked or on the total quantity of food which may be taken. Only carbohydrates – Sugars and Starches are restricted.


The First Clinical Dietary Trial

In the first clinical dietary trial in 1928, Dr Vilhjalmur Stefansson (a world-famous explorer and anthropologist) and Dr Karsten Anderson (Stefansson’s colleague) entered a controlled experiment into the effects of an all-meat diet on the body. The committee which was compiled to oversee the experiment was one of the best qualified in medical history, consisting of all the leaders of all the branches of science related to the subject. Dr Eugene F. DuBois (Medical Director of the Sage Foundation and subsequent chief physician at the New York Hospital), directed the experiment. The trial was conducted to supply answers to the following 5 questions:

  1. Does the withholding of vegetable foods cause scurvy?
  2. Will an all-meat diet cause deficiency diseases?
  3. Will it cause mineral deficiencies, of calcium in particular?
  4. Will it have a harmful effect on the heart, blood vessels or kidneys?
  5. Will it promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut?


Amazingly, after a year-long study, the results concluded a definitive answer: no. Both men remained healthy; their bowels remained normal and their stools were smaller and did not smell.

In a separate experiment done by Stefansson where he restricted his carbohydrate intake, he noted an overall feeling of health and wellbeing. During this experiment his calorie intake varied between 2000-3100 per day, deriving an average of 80% of his energy from animal fat and the remaining 20% from protein.

While on the all-meat diet, Stefansson’s blood cholesterol levels dropped by 1.3 mmol/l and increased again when he resumed a ‘normal’ diet.

To conclude, the lack of starchy and sugary carbohydrates appeared to have only good effects.
